Ha dedicato la sua vita agli ultimi. A Palermo ha fondato la "Missione Speranza e Carità".
È morto questa mattina a Palermo Biagio Conte, 59 anni, missionario laico protagonista di numerose battaglie in difesa dei poveri e degli indigenti a Palermo dove nel 1993 aveva fondato la Missione Speranza e Carità.
Da tempo era gravemente malato; attorno a lui si sono stretti fino all’ultimo i volontari e gli ospiti della comunità che aveva fondato.
Nella missione si sta recando anche il vescovo di Palermo Corrado Lorefice.
Una vita spesa per gli ultimi quella di Biagio Conte, che ha creato a Palermo e in provincia nove comunità. Figlio di imprenditori edili, a tre anni viene portato in Svizzera in un collegio di suore, ritornando a Palermo a 9 anni per poi essere inserito nel collegio di San Martino delle Scale per quattro anni. A 16 anni abbandona la scuola e inizia precocemente a lavorare nell’impresa edile della sua famiglia, ma a causa di una profonda crisi spirituale decide di allontanarsi dalla famiglia nel 1983, andando a vivere a Firenze. Nel maggio 1990 la scelta di vivere come eremita, ritirandosi nelle montagne dell’entroterra siciliano e successivamente facendo un viaggio interamente a piedi verso la città di Assisi. Il viaggio è stato reso noto alle cronache per gli appelli della famiglia d’origine alla trasmissione Rai “Chi l’ha visto?”, dove Biagio risponde in diretta informando del suo cammino verso Assisi. Torna quindi a Palermo per salutare i familiari, con l’intenzione di trasferirsi in Africa come missionario, ma lo stato di miseria in cui ritrova la sua città lo porta a cambiare idea. In un primo momento è attivo nel portare conforto ai senzatetto della Stazione di Palermo Centrale, per i quali si batte attraverso diverse proteste ed un digiuno, grazie al quale ottiene l’utilizzo di alcuni locali in via Archirafi, all’interno dei quali fonda nel 1993 la “Missione di Speranza e Carità”, che oggi accoglie più di un centinaio di persone. Il 16 gennaio 2014 Biagio Conte, da anni costretto su una sedia a rotelle a causa di vertebre schiacciate a seguito delle spossanti fatiche cui si è sottoposto nella Missione, riprende a camminare dopo un’immersione nelle acque di Lourdes. Nel 2018, dopo la morte di alcuni senzatetto nelle strade di Palermo, in segno di protesta contro la povertà decide di dormire in strada, sotto i portici del Palazzo delle Poste centrali, iniziando uno sciopero della fame durato dieci giorni; in seguito la Regione ha finanziato l’ampliamento della struttura di via Decollati. E anche in questi ultimi giorni, pur gravemente malato, Frà Biagio era tornato a lanciare appelli alle istituzioni per aiutare la missione che aveva fondato nel pagamento delle bollette e delle spese necessarie per garantire l’assistenza agli indigenti. Sulla figura del missionario laico è stato girato anche un film intitolato “Biagio”, dal regista palermitano Pasquale Scimeca.
