Due persone con una diversa storia alle spalle, ma con molti punti in comune: entrambi vengono ricordati come “giornalisti” uccisi dalla mafia: per la verità Fava era un “professionista” del giornalismo, Peppino, malgrado qualche rara corrispondenza a “Lotta continua” aveva dedicato la sua attenzione all’informazione orale attraverso Radio Aut. Solo nel 1996 gli sarà concessa., alla memoria, l’iscrizione all’albo dei giornalisti. Entrambi avevano identificato nei grandi mafiosi della loro zona, da una parte Nitto Santapaola, dall’altra Tano Badalamenti, i nemici della Sicilia e del suo decollo economico e sociale. Entrambi amavano l’arte, il teatro, anche se Peppino non scrisse mai nulla, mentre i lavori teatrali di Fava ancora oggi suscitano ammirazione. Entrambi, subito dopo la loro morte vennero diffamati, secondo le regole e le strategie mafiose, affinchè di loro si perdesse la memoria: Fava un “femminaro”, Peppino un “terrorista”. Fortunatamente, almeno in questi due casi, il tempo e le indagini hanno fatto giustizia e i colpevoli sono stati individuati e condannati. L’esempio di Peppino e di Fava ripropone l’importanza e la delicatezza dell’informazione, dove oggi il monopolio che alcuni gangsters e piduisti esercitano su questo campo, serve a creare consenso, alla ricerca di soluzioni autoritarie per soffocare la democrazia.

5 gennaio 1948: nasce Peppino Impastato. Oggi avrebbe 75 anni. A 44 anni dal suo omicidio qualcuno mi chiede o si chiede che cosa farebbe oggi, quale strada avrebbe percorso, con chi si sarebbe schierato. Chiaro che non esistono risposte, ma esercizi di fantasia, nei quali qualsiasi ipotesi è consentita. Peppino era ed è rimasto quello che è, quello che fu, un contestatore del sistema di potere, non solo quello del suo tempo, ma quello storico che si è solidificato sin dalla notte dei tempi. La sua identità fu quella di essere comunicatore, uno che aveva un progetto politico ben chiaro, la realizzazione di una società senza ingiustizie e senza differenze di ricchezza, cioè di una società di uguali, in cui non solo la legge è uguale per tutti, ma anche la vita. E se uguaglianza non significa banalità, conformismo, assuefazione, ma, al contrario possibilità di sviluppare le proprie capacità, allora questo è, era per lui, comunismo. LO aveva scritto in un’agendina nel 1972: “Il comunismo non è oggetto di libera scelta individuale né vocazione artistica. E’ una necessità materiale e psicologica”. Dopo di che su di lui è stato detto di tutto, si è cercato di elasticizzarlo, di farne un uomo “per tutte le stagioni”, una icona da mettere in ogni sezione di partito o al quale intestare una strada, uno che lottava contro la mafia e basta, di pregare per lui o farne un santino cui esprimere devozione e ammirazione. Tanti hanno la brutta abitudine di dire: “Io sono….aggiungendovi il nome del personaggio nel quale vogliono identificarsi o al quale esprimere solidarietà. In realtà ognuno è quello che è e dovrebbe restare tale, senza bisogno di immedesimarsi in modelli per nascondere le proprie insufficienze. Se c’è qualcuno che se la sente, dica pure: “Io sono Peppino Impastato”, purchè abbia poi il coraggio di aggiungere “Io sono comunista”, come lo era e pensava di esserlo Peppino. Dopo di che, fare gli auguri a una persona morta nel 1978 ha solo un senso se la sentiamo ancora vicina, se avvertiamo il suo flusso d’energia, se riteniamo che le sue idee rivoluzionarie siano una base di lotta per ribaltare le perversioni in cui la struttura capitalistica della società stritola l’essenza di ognuno di noi. Non si spaventi nessuno: questo lo ha detto anche Papa Francesco…

5 maggio 1984: per una di quelle coincidenze strane, oggi ricorre anche il 39° anniversario della morte di Giuseppe Fava, senza dubbio il più grande giornalista siciliano, ucciso, anche lui come Peppino, “perchè parlava troppo”. Si noti che il numero “48”, data di nascita di Peppino è, capovolto, il numero “84”, data della morte di Fava e che si chiamano entrambi Giuseppe. Peppino parlava, Pippo scriveva “troppo” direttamente sul suo splendido giornale “I Siciliani”. Parlare e scrivere: due modi convergenti di informare e stimolare il pensiero. Ebbe la fortuna di trovare un gruppo di collaboratori che erano nati giornalisti, che sapevano fare le inchieste, che avevano cominciato a leggere lucidamente i meccanismi perversi di questa società e sapevano illustrarli e denunciarli. Sia Peppino che Pippo Fava sono stati gli antesignani del modo di fare giornalismo libero, senza padroni e senza censure: farlo in Sicilia non è facile, perché la violenza della mafia ha imposto la legge del silenzio, “mutu cu sapi u iocu”, l’omertà “nun sacciu, nun vitti, nun ntisi” e chi cerca di deviare dalla regola, di dire in faccia come stanno le cose è additato come nemico del sistema di potere, che controlla tutte le informazioni e decide quali far circolare, grazie ai suoi lecchini giornalisti. Fava ha dato il suo grande messaggio, che ognuno di noi dovrebbe scrivere all’ingresso della sua porta, sul frontone della stanza da letto, sullo specchio del bagno, dentro il portafogli o direttamente sulla sua testa: “A che serve vivere, se non si ha il coraggio di lottare?”.
Qualche giorno dopo la morte di Pippo Fava, ho scritto questa poesia:
Per Giuseppe Fava
Dai cadaveri viventi
il solito “Cu ci u faceva fari?”,
e continueremo a morire,
a vederci rubare
i momenti migliori della nostra vita
perché non abbiamo accettato
le regole della sopraffazione,
perché abbiamo voluto
salvare la dignità per gli altri.
Continueremo in solitudine
la nostra fragile lotta
contro i corvi del potere
senza rinunciare
alla certezza del giusto:
sulla resa di pochi
è la sconfitta di tutti.
Possiamo ancora farcela:
se questo venir fuori,
candidarsi a bersaglio,
servisse come seme
per la ribellione dei vinti,
moriremmo con meno angoscia.
Gli anniversari hanno un senso se non sono sterili esercizi di memoria e retoriche commemorazioni di ciò che fu e che mai più potrà tornare. Spesso in questo “mai più” c’è l’accettazione rassegnata che certe azioni, mitizzate, siano irripetibili e irraggiungibili, ovvero una dichiarazione di resa e di incapacità giustificativa delle proprie insufficienze. L’eroe è tale in quanto persona non comune e le persone comuni non possono quindi essere eroi. Eroismi e mitizzazioni servono a ipostatizzare, a presunte grandezze che esulano dalla normalità e che difendono tale normalità, spesso mediocrità attraverso una immaginaria identificazione nel personaggio mitizzato.
30 dicembre 1997: muore Danilo Dolci, il grande sociologo triestino, del quale qualche giorno fa si è ricordato il 25° anniversario della morte, scelse anche lui di vivere e morire da siciliano, così come Mauro Rostagno e ha tracciato il metodo per dare un senso alla propria vita, ovvero quello di esserci con tutto se stesso, di trovare all’interno di ognuno le energie presenti e di trasformarle in impegno. E quindi ecco i suoi passaggi indispensabili per innestare il cambiamento, per accendere la miccia: rifiuto della rassegnazione, incontro e dialogo, analisi del territorio, della gente e dei suoi bisogni, costruzione di un progetto, ricerca e appropriazione degli strumenti necessari, lotta comune incalzare senza tregua i padroni del potere, delle ingiustizie, delle incompiutezze, dello sfruttamento, della costruzione di falsi valori e di false religioni, e non dar loro il tempo di riprendersi con le inevitabili controffensive, che spesso si servono del delitto pur di non perdere un centimetro del privilegio posseduto.
Peppino Impastato e Giuseppe Fava ebbero, come Danilo, questa grande capacità di tirar fuori il meglio di sè e di dedicarlo al miglioramento della società, della Sicilia in particolare, attraverso la creazione di continue iniziative, aggregazioni, scioperi, denunce, inchieste con nomi e cognomi di mafiosi e politici loro protettori. Di quei grandi momenti oggi sembra essere rimasto ben poco, specialmente in questa fase in cui il virus ha ridotto gli spazi di inchiesta e di ricerca, ha ristretto la comunicazione a una paccottiglia di notizie omogeneizzate e inutili, frullate e date in pasto già digerite, senza alcuno spazio di partecipazione dal basso e senza alcuno stimolo di riflessione critica. Per questo ricordare questi uomini non basta, né atteggiarsi ad amici , compagni, testimoni, unici eredi e depositari della conoscenza, ripetitori nostalgici di testimonianze spesso alterate da curiosi scherzi di una lontana memoria. Lo dico anche per me. Occorre andare oltre loro. O almeno provarci.
